Radio Tee

There was one radio in the house. It sat in the same spot for thirty years. Nobody moved it except to dust underneath it, and even then it went back to exactly the same position because the position was no longer a choice — it had become a fact of the room, as fixed as a wall or a window.

It was tuned once. To All India Radio. To 657 kHz. To Vividh Bharati on Wednesday evenings and cricket commentary on Test match days and the news at 8pm every night without exception. The dial never moved after that because there was nowhere else to go. This was the frequency. This was the station. This was what the radio was for.
